How It Works
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, or NMN, is the direct precursor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), in other words, NMN allows our body to create more NAD+.
NAD+ is responsible for maintaining the structure and integrity of DNA. As we age, NAD+ levels decrease, allowing environmental factors such as radiation, pollution, and other factors to damage our DNA. If our cells have damaged DNA (or more specifically damaged epigenetic information), then our cells don’t have clear instructions about how to behave or what type of cell they are. Over time, this “mass confusion” is the mark of aging. NAD+, and therefore NMN, can clean up that mess and get our cells back to normal, like younger cells.
According to Harvard geneticist David Sinclair, we don’t have to accept aging as inevitable.
By supplementing our diet with NMN, we may be able to slow, and in some cases reverse, the effects of aging and common age related disorders such as heart disease, Alzheimer’s and other decreases in cognitive functions, metabolic disorders as well as immune system diseases. And that’s only a few.
If NAD+ is what we need,
why not use that?
NAD+ in its complete state has low bioavailability with oral supplementation, meaning that the body will not absorb it efficiently. Therefore, NAD+ levels do not increase with any statistical significance.
But precursors of NAD+ do.
NMN is a derivative of niacin, a form of vitamin B3, which is found in foods like meat, poultry redfish, nuts, legumes and seeds. While adding these foods to your diet is certainly not a bad idea, the amount you would need to eat in order to raise NAD+ stores would be an impossible feat. Not only that, prescription strength niacin supplements have been proven to cause hepatotoxicity and increase the risk of Type 2 Diabetes. NMN can be taken in smaller doses without the negative side effects of prescription strength niacin.
Can NMN be the cure
for COVID-19?
As the global pandemic drags on, we are learning more and more about this dangerous disease. One of the things we do know is that the COVID-19 is far deadlier in people over the age of 80 with a staggering mortality rate of 13.4%. At age 50, that chance reduces to about 1.25% and at age 20, down to 0.06%.
Doctors in the field of aging believe that it may be possible to decrease the rate of deaths due to COVID-19 in elderly patients by treating aging itself. It is believed that both NMN and NR (another precursor of NAD+) may be part of the answer to halting the widespread destruction of COVID-19.
At this time, the FDA does not recognize any diet supplementation in COVID-19 treatment. As with all things, please seek advice from your doctor to come up with your personal health plan.
